What are the differences between PPL, CPL, and ATPL?

When choosing to pursue a career in aviation, it is essential to understand the different types of licenses available.

Each license represents a specific milestone and offers different opportunities based on your ambitions.

PPL (Private Pilot Licence)

The Private Pilot License (PPL) allows you to pilot an airplane for recreational purposes and on a non-commercial basis (you cannot be paid for flying). The license does not impose any limits on the number of passengers you can carry or the type of aircraft you are authorized to fly.

CPL (Commercial Pilot Licence)

The Modular Commercial Pilot License (CPL) course will allow you to begin a professional career in the aviation sector, either as a first officer in an airline or as a professional pilot in the aviation industry.

ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence)

The ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot License) is the license that allows you to become an airline pilot, specifically enabling you to command a commercial aircraft as captain. To begin a professional pilot career flying an airplane, it is essential to invest in training by attending either a modular or integrated ATPL course at an “Approved Training Organisation” (ATO). Here, you will obtain the necessary flight licenses (formerly known as certifications) that airlines require for hiring professional pilots.
